One-Time vs Monthly Website Pricing for Small Businesses

One-time vs monthly website pricing for small businesses, explained. What each includes, what it costs over time, and the questions to ask before you sign.

One-time vs monthly website pricing is one of the first choices you'll face when you get a website for your small business. Some designers charge one price up front and hand you the site. Others charge a monthly fee that covers the site, hosting and updates. Neither is a scam and neither is always better. The right one depends on your cash flow, how often your site needs to change, and who you want doing the work.

Here's how each one works, what it really costs over time, and what to ask before you sign anything.

How one-time website pricing works

You pay once to have the site designed and built, usually by a freelancer, an agency or a ready-made website service. After launch, the site is yours.

What's usually not included: hosting (the service that keeps your site online), your domain name, and changes after launch. Some providers include a first year of hosting. After that, you pay for hosting separately, and every update is either your job or a new invoice.

Typical price: $1,500 to $8,000 from a freelancer, $5,000 or more from an agency, or a few hundred dollars for a ready-made site.

Good fit if: you have the cash, your services and prices rarely change, and you want to own the site outright.

How monthly website pricing works

You pay a monthly fee, often with little or nothing up front. The fee usually covers the design, hosting, security and a set amount of updates each month.

What to watch for: long contracts, cancellation fees, and plans where you never own the site. With some monthly plans, if you stop paying, your website disappears and you start over from nothing.

Typical price: anywhere from about $50 to a few hundred dollars a month, depending on how much is included. Website builders like Wix and Squarespace are a do-it-yourself version, at about $17 to $29 a month plus your time.

Good fit if: you'd rather not pay a large amount up front, you want someone else to handle updates, or your offers, photos and prices change often.

One-time vs monthly: side by side

One-time pricing Monthly pricing
Upfront cost Higher Low or nothing
Hosting Often extra after year one Usually included
Updates after launch You, or a new invoice Usually included, within limits
Who owns the site You, in most cases Depends on the contract
Best when Cash on hand, few changes Tight cash flow, frequent changes

How to compare the real cost

Don't compare the first invoice. Compare what you'll pay over two or three years, including:

  • The upfront price
  • Hosting after any included period ends
  • What you'll pay for updates, or the value of your own time making them
  • Your domain name, usually $10 to $25 a year
  • Any cancellation fees or contract minimums on a monthly plan

A cheap one-time site that needs paid updates every month can cost more than a monthly plan. A monthly plan that never ends can cost more than buying the site once. Writing out the two or three year total makes the answer obvious.

5 questions to ask before you sign

  1. Do I own the website and the domain? Your domain should be registered in your name, no matter which plan you pick.
  2. What happens if I stop paying? Find out whether you keep the site, can move it, or lose it.
  3. How long is the contract? Watch for 24 or 36 month minimums and early cancellation fees.
  4. What counts as an update? Swapping a photo and adding a new page are very different jobs.
  5. Is hosting included, and for how long? "Free hosting" often means the first year only.

How we price Grab & Go Sites

We offer both, so you can pick what fits your cash flow:

  • Pay once: $499. You own the site, and your first year of hosting is included. Add the optional $50/month Care Plan any time for monthly updates and Google Business Profile upkeep. After year one, the Care Plan also keeps your site hosted.
  • Monthly: $99/month for 12 months, with nothing up front. It includes the site and the Care Plan. After 12 months the site is yours, and the plan becomes the $50/month Care Plan, which you can cancel any time after that.

Both are ready-made sites, already designed and written for your industry, and live on your domain in about a week. Browse the lawn care and landscaping, plumbing and house cleaning sites, or see every industry we cover.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay one time for a small business website?

Yes. Freelancers, agencies and ready-made website services all offer one-time pricing. Just check what happens after launch: hosting, your domain and updates are often extra, sometimes after a free first year.

Is it better to pay once or monthly for a website?

Pay once if you have the cash, want to own the site and rarely need changes. Pay monthly if you'd rather spread out the cost and want someone else to handle hosting and updates. Compare the total over two or three years, not the first invoice.

How much is a monthly website plan for a small business?

Monthly plans that include design, hosting and updates usually range from about $50 to a few hundred dollars a month. Do-it-yourself website builders cost about $17 to $29 a month, but you do all the work.

Do I own my website if I pay monthly?

It depends on the contract. Some monthly plans transfer the site to you after a set period, and others never do. Ask before you sign, and make sure your domain name is registered in your own name either way.
